These three graphic novels comprise the biography of civil rights leader, Representative John Lewis. Drawn by Nate Powell, these stunning black and white illustrations describe John Lewis and his involvement with the civil rights movement and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Intermixed with the narration of the 1960s struggle are flash forwards to January 20, 2009 when President Obama was inaugurated as the first African American president.
All students should read at least the first book if not the entire trilogy. They are powerful books describing a dark period in our history. This book gets my top rating!

This is the story of Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson, descendants of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. They meet at a boarding school in Connecticut. When a bully is murdered, Charlotte and Jamie find themselves as the prime suspects and must work together to find out who the murderer is. Charlotte and Jamie are not perfect characters which I found interesting. Although they may show some characteristics of their famous family members, they are not replicas. They are also teenagers and act their age. If you enjoy a good mystery and especially are fans of Sherlock Holmes, I recommend this novel to you. This is the first book of the Charlotte Holmes series. When the term mythology comes up, often people think of the Greek or Roman gods and goddesses, Odysseus, etc. But there are mythologies from other lands including in Northern mythology. Neil Gaiman adapted some of the Norse myths in this book. He focuses on the adventures of Thor and Loki. I thought this book was well written. I really liked the fact there was a glossary in the back. I wished there was a pronunciation key though. Some of those Norse names are difficult to say! But don't let that stop you from reading this fun book! |
