Cadence is a Sinclair. The Sinclairs are a wealthy family who spend their summers on Beechwood Island, their own private island. Cadence, her cousins Mirren and Johnny, and friend Gat, call themselves The Liars. One summer, Cadence is found in the half in the ocean with a severe brain injury. Since the accident, she gets these migraines and she has no memory of what happened. Why did she go for a swim in the middle of the night by herself? Why didn't her cousins and Gat, the boy she loves contact her or visit her when she was recovering? This was a fun book to read with an amazing plot twist, that despite all the clues I was not expecting.

Wow! This book really blew me away. Justyce is an African American boy who goes to a private boarding school in Atlanta. He gets a call about his on-again-off-again girlfriend being too drunk to drive so he walks to her location in the middle of the night. As he is trying to get her into the car, a police officer arrives and thinking Justyce is trying to carjack Melo's car, arrests him without asking any questions or allowing Justyce to explain what he is doing. That leads Justyce to start writing letters to Martin Luther King Jr. in a notebook. It also heightens his awareness of the injustices and racism around him. This book really shows how even the slightest racism (tensional or unintentional) can cause a series of events to occur leading to tragic results. This novel is highly recommended and would be a great novel for book clubs. |
