Starr Carter and her childhood best friend, Khalil, are driving in a car when they are pulled over. Suddenly the police officer opens fire and Khalil is killed. Starr already lives in two worlds: her poor black neighborhood and the suburban prep school where she attends. Now she must cope with the death of her friend and the perceptions about him that come up when his story becomes national headlines.
I loved the characters in this book. They are all so complicated--so real. I kept comparing it with Jason Reynolds' All American Boys. This would make an excellent book discussion. So much to talk about!

Tells the story of Abe who as a teen is asked by a teacher are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean? It discusses how when placed in hot water how the carrot, egg, and coffee bean changes. The same can describe how we react during stressful times. I read this in one sitting and found it to be very inspirational and will be one I will keep around the house as a reminder. The final book of The Great Library series begins with the Archivist out of power however still very dangerous. He and his loyal soldiers are plotting to retake the Great Library. Jess and his friends not only have to go after the Archivist but also defend the Great Library from the outside nations who have their ships nearby. Just like the other books in the series, the group is scattered about handling multiple of issues at one time. It is also full of action from the very beginning to the satisfying conclusion. I will miss these characters! Six students enter their high school just before the school year begins. They all have their reasons for being there. When a series of bombs go off, they come together to survive. They see rescue personnel outside the building but not going in because of threats of more bombs going off! They later learn that one of the bombers has been caught and the other is one of them. This was a quick read because I just couldn't put it down. Told in multiple points of view so you can get in each character's head. This was a great strategy because it really keeps you guessing as to who the second bomber is until the climax of the story. |
