Starr Carter and her childhood best friend, Khalil, are driving in a car when they are pulled over. Suddenly the police officer opens fire and Khalil is killed. Starr already lives in two worlds: her poor black neighborhood and the suburban prep school where she attends. Now she must cope with the death of her friend and the perceptions about him that come up when his story becomes national headlines.
I loved the characters in this book. They are all so complicated--so real. I kept comparing it with Jason Reynolds' All American Boys. This would make an excellent book discussion. So much to talk about!
