This young adult novel takes place several years after the Disney movie, Brave. On Christmas Eve, Merida discovers the God Feradach preparing to destroy DunBroch. She makes a deal with Feradach and Cailleach that she will change her entire family in a year. Merida decides to accomplish this by going on three trips with various members of her family. Can she save her family and her land by changing them in time?
Stiefvater did a good job bringing this animated royal family to life and keeping them true to the Disney film. She gave the triplets more depth in their character than shown in the movie. Full of adventure, this was a fun novel to read. Those who loved the movie when they were kids, will enjoy this book.

This is a collection of sixteen short stories based on fairy tales and other literary characters such as Wendy for Peter Pan, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Dorothy Gayle from Wizard of Oz. There are even stories about Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson are also here. I found this imaginative book a lot of fun to read. Where else are you going to find Wendy forming labor unions and Dorothy returning home from the circus. If you are a fan of fantasy, fairy tales, and Jane Yolen, I recommend this book to you. Kyle has it all: good looks, friends, girlfriend, money, popularity, etc. However, he is full of himself and when he treats Kendra poorly by standing her up at the dance, things change for him. She reveals to him that she is a witch and as punishment she turns him into a beast. She notes that he did give a rose corsage to Lindy so she gives him two years to find someone to fall in love with and who will love him for him and not his looks. This follows the Beauty and the Beast fairytale rather closely. It was a quick and fun story to read. Not only did I enjoy reading the "Beast's" point of view, but I liked the modern day twist. I recommend this book for teens and adults who enjoy fairy tales adaptations. When the term mythology comes up, often people think of the Greek or Roman gods and goddesses, Odysseus, etc. But there are mythologies from other lands including in Northern mythology. Neil Gaiman adapted some of the Norse myths in this book. He focuses on the adventures of Thor and Loki. I thought this book was well written. I really liked the fact there was a glossary in the back. I wished there was a pronunciation key though. Some of those Norse names are difficult to say! But don't let that stop you from reading this fun book! |
