This is the sequel to The Inheritance Games. Avery and the Hawthorne boys have completed the game billionaire Tobias Hawthorne had left but one other mystery remains. Is the man she played chess with in the park after her mother died, Toby Hawthorne? And yet another game begins, but this one could be deadly. This novel takes place immediately after The Inheritance Games. Avery is still adjusting to her new life as heiress to the Hawthorne estate. She and the boys uncover secrets from the past which brings up more questions than answers. The more they cover, the more danger she is in. Fans of Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Maureen Johnson, and other mystery writers, will enjoy this sequel. I recommend reading The Inheritance Games first.

Ivy lost the student council election to a class clown. She is not looking forward to his victory assembly. So when she sees her old friends Mateo and Cal in the school parking lot, they decide to relive the time they snuck away from a field trip and explored the city on their own. They get into Cal's car and drive off. While in the city, they see another student and decide to follow him only to discover him dead and Ivy is the prime suspect. Can Ivy, Mateo, and Cal solve the case and save Ivy from being framed for murder? McManus does a great job keeping up the suspense. Each one has secrets and suspects are all around them. I recommend this novel to those who have enjoyed McManus's other books as well as Jennifer Barnes, Maureen Johnson, and E. Lockhart novels. Imagine, you are in high school, trying to do your best to earn a scholarship so you can go to college when all of a sudden you are told that a billionaire had named you in his will. You have no idea who this guy is. You never met him, or at least you don't think you did. So you go to the reading of the will only to find out that you have inherited his entire estate and fortune! That is what happened to Avery Grambs. There are stipulations though. In order to fully inherit, she must live in the Hawthorne mansion for a year with the family who was written out of the will, including his four handsome, but unruly grandsons: Grayson, Jameson, Xander, and Nash. Together, they must solve Tobias Hawthorne's riddles to discover family secrets and why Avery became the sole heir of the estate.
Full of twists and turns, this mystery of Avery's inheritance was a very good read. The boys are mischievous but Avery is able to hold her own with them. Fans of Karen McManus and E. Lockhart will enjoy this novel. During the summer before Cullen Witter's senior year, everything changes in his little town of Lily, Arkansas. Birdwatcher John Barling comes to town claiming there were sightings of an extinct woodpecker creating quite a stir in town. Then the unthinkable happens: his brother Gabriel disappears. Meanwhile Benton Sage leaves Atlanta on a mission trip to Ethiopia which changes his life as well as his college roommate, Cabot Searcy. This was an amazing read. The stories of Cullen and Benton/Cabot seem so far off but eventually, they do come together in an unexpected twist. I think more young adults will relate to Cullen and how he perceives the woodpecker craze in his little town. I strongly recommend this award winning novel. After solving the kidnapping and murder cold case at her school, Stevie Bell is invited to Camp Sunny Pines in Barlow Corners, Massachusetts, by an eccentric box executive who had just purchased it. He wants her to solve the infamous unsolved Box in the Woods case from 1978 where four campers were murdered when the camp was Camp Wonder Falls. She brings along her friends Janelle and Nate. While investigating, another person falls victim. Will Stevie be next? This is a fun adventurous mystery in the woods in a small town full of secrets. I did like the characters, especially Nate with his witty comments. Those who enjoy mysteries and the rest of the Truly Devious novels will want to read this novel. Josie Moraine is a recent high school graduate who lives in the French Quarter of New Orleans in 1950. She has a tough life as the daughter of a brothel prostitute. She lives above a bookshop owned by author Charlie Marlowe and works at the shop with Charlie's son, Patrick. In the mornings, she cleans Willie Woodley's - uh, place of business. On New Year's Eve, a gentleman from Memphis comes into the book shop to buy two books: a book of poetry by Keats and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. While purchasing the books, the gentleman encourages Josie to go to college - something she never gave much thought about before. The following day she learns that he had died. This is a fantastic read. There are so many complex characters from Willie, Charlie, Jesse, Patrick, and the oh, so creepy Mr. Lockwell. Josie is such a strong character, although I am certain she would not consider herself that. I recommend this novel to more mature teens and adults. Ginny receives thirteen little blue envelopes from her beloved aunt who had died of cancer. The first one has $1000 and instructions to get a plane ticket to London. Each envelope has her do something out of her comfort zone but in the process, she gets to know who her aunt was and a bit more about herself.
This was a fun adventure. You had no idea what her aunt is going to have her do next. During her adventure, she meets people who knew her aunt like Richard who works at Harrods, and others like playwright Keith who didn't know her aunt, but goes along for the ride. Ginny has a lot of guts to go on an adventure like this without many supplies or money and she goes through a lot - both good and bad - on this trip, but along the way, she learns some valuable life lessons and grows throughout the story. An enjoyable read. This novel in verse tells the story of Camino Rios and Yahaira Rios. Camino lives in the Dominican Republic. Yahaira Rios lives in New York City. Neither knows the other exists until their father is killed in a plane crash and they learn he had two families. This is a beautifully written story about grieving while dealing with another whole bunch of emotions after learning about a father's secret life. Both girls are likeable, strong characters. This is a fantastic mystery/suspense series. Stevie is a mystery fan who is excited when she receives word that she has been accepted into Ellingham Academy in the mountains of Vermont. The main reason she wanted to go there was so she could solve the mystery of when the wife and daughter of the academy's founder is kidnapped in 1936.
The chapters go back and forth between current day and in the late 1930s when the crime was committed. Ellingham loved puzzles so he designed the campus with tunnels and secret rooms. Like the academy, this series is full of twists and turns - and murder. Mystery fans should read this series.
