This Young Adult book takes place in Canada. Hermione Winters is so excited about going to cheerleading camp this year because she and her best friend Polly are the co-captains of their school's squad. However, during a dance Hermione is drugged and raped. She is found at the edge of the lake. She has no memory of the attack nor who the boy was who gave her the drugged drink. With the support of her family and cheerleading squad, she returns to school and as co-captain. Hermione is lucky because she has strong support. Her squad defends her after rumors start spreading about her rape, however, there are many young rape victims who do not have the support like Hermione did. I hope by reading this book, young women would be inspired to help out if a friend is a victim of rape.

Kyle has it all: good looks, friends, girlfriend, money, popularity, etc. However, he is full of himself and when he treats Kendra poorly by standing her up at the dance, things change for him. She reveals to him that she is a witch and as punishment she turns him into a beast. She notes that he did give a rose corsage to Lindy so she gives him two years to find someone to fall in love with and who will love him for him and not his looks. This follows the Beauty and the Beast fairytale rather closely. It was a quick and fun story to read. Not only did I enjoy reading the "Beast's" point of view, but I liked the modern day twist. I recommend this book for teens and adults who enjoy fairy tales adaptations. Seventeen-year-old Cassie is waitressing. She has a knack of reading people, picking out the slightest details about a person. Then the FBI approaches her and offers her an opportunity she can't help but join. She joins the Naturals, a secret FBI program and brings in teens with unique abilities and they look into cold cases. However, when a serial killer strikes, Cassie can't help but think they are related to the murder of her mother when she was a young girl. I thought the characters were likeable. There are a lot of twists and turns that leave you guessing. It ends with a lot of strings unsolved in preparation of the sequel. I recommend this book to those who enjoy thrillers and mysteries. If you enjoyed Barry Lyga's I Hunt Killers, then you'd probably enjoy this series. |
