This novel in verse is a beautiful coming-of-age story. Xiomara Batista lives in Harlem where she feels nobody pays attention to her. She secretly writes her frustrations in a notebook in the form of poetry. When she is invited to attend her school's poetry club, she is hesitant at first, but she once she does, her life is changed. This is a great novel in verse. It is about how X finds out who she is. I strongly recommend this novel to students who enjoy poetry and those who enjoy realistic fiction.

This novel in verse tells the story of Camino Rios and Yahaira Rios. Camino lives in the Dominican Republic. Yahaira Rios lives in New York City. Neither knows the other exists until their father is killed in a plane crash and they learn he had two families. This is a beautifully written story about grieving while dealing with another whole bunch of emotions after learning about a father's secret life. Both girls are likeable, strong characters.
Blade Morrison is the son of a big name rock star. Sounds cool, right? Sure music is big in his family and he has everything a seventeen year old would want with little worries about money. However, his father is a drunk and his actions under the influence has created many problems for Blade. For example, his girlfriend's parents don't want her to date Blade because of his father. On his graduation, Blade is all set to sing his graduation speech when his father crashes his graduation. Literally, his drunk father crashes into the stage on his motorcycle! Fed up with his father, when Blade learns of a family secret he runs off to Ghana to learn the truth, but in the end learns more about himself. Written in poetry/song lyric form, this is a fun coming-of-age story. I strongly recommend this novel to those who enjoy all kinds of music and a positive coming of age young adult novel. |
